Moving Tips
- Always remember: the heavier the item, the smaller the box.
- Always stack dishes on their side when packing. Not flat!
- Never use printed newsprint to wrap fine china. The black print can be tough on your china.
- Always use packing tape. Refrain from using duct tape. It's impossible to get off.
- Label all boxes on the top and on the side.
- Pack important and sentimental documents separately so that they are easily accessible: Children's health records, passports, family records, insurance information and photo albums are good examples.
- Don't throw out your children's favorite things prior to the move. Kids can have a hard time dealing with the change brought on by the move itself.
- For larger appliances, check your owner's manuals to ensure if there are special instructions for moving.
- When you disassemble furniture and other items, make sure to tape all parts to the main base.
- Small boxes are best for books. They can get heavy, very fast.
- Wardrobe boxes make closets easier to pack and organize. Clothes in drawers can be left in place or in suitcases.
- Start packing items with less importance such as those you will not need to access immediately.
- Moving companies can't transport hazardous materials such as gasoline, bottled gases and other flammables, ammunition and explosives. It's the law.
- Try and avoid mixing items from different rooms in the same box; it can be confusing.
- The last things on the truck are usually the essential items you will need right away. Make sure they're last.
- Always pack and unpack breakables on top of a padded surface.
- Always tape boxes shut for safety and security.
- Clean out closets, the attic and the basement as soon as you've made the decision to move.
- Make a "survival closet" of things you'll need for the last cleanup before you move out – broom, dust cloth, dust pan and mop.
- Remember to get plenty of snacks and refreshments for move day.
- Schedule times one week prior to the move to ensure the cable, phone and utilities are disconnected and your final meter readings are taken.
- Mail in your change of address forms one week before you move.
- The day before your move, make sure to defrost the fridge and leave the door ajar.
